PESCO Bill Check Without Reference Number 2026: 7 Methods

Updated: August 2026

Let’s clear this up first, because half the pages ranking for this question dodge it: you cannot look up a PESCO bill by name, CNIC or meter number. The billing portal reads a 14-digit reference number, or a 10-digit customer ID, and it reads nothing else.

What you can do is get that number back. With your CNIC and the property address, a call to 091-9212400 (or the universal 118) usually settles it. If the phone route stalls — which happens more in the outer districts — the subdivision office always works.

Seven methods below, roughly in the order that they succeed. Already have your number? Go to PESCO bill online check.

On a different distribution company? The same problem affects all of them. Our main guide on how to check an electricity bill without a reference number covers every DISCO plus K-Electric.

Why There’s No Name or CNIC Lookup

Two things are going on. The first is privacy. The second, and the one that actually blocks most people, is that the meter is often not registered in your name at all — rented houses, inherited property, connections still in a previous owner’s or a late relative’s name. In each of those cases your CNIC has no link to the billing account, so even a CNIC search would find nothing for you.

The “check bill by CNIC” claim, and the sites that exploit it, are covered in full in our main guide to checking an electricity bill without a reference number. The short version: PESCO indexes on the 14-digit reference number, so recovering that number is the job.

Finding the Reference Number on a Bill

Top-left of the page, under the consumer name and address. Fourteen digits, labelled REFERENCE NO, printed a little larger than the surrounding text.

Something like 14231234567890.

The leading digits encode your circle and subdivision, so every bill in your street begins with the same few numbers. Minor detail, but it helps — quoting the prefix on the helpline narrows the search noticeably.

The number belongs to the meter, not to you. New house means a new number. A replaced meter can also mean a new reference, which is the usual reason a number that worked last year suddenly returns nothing.

Every other line on the bill is explained in electricity bill terms explained.

The reference number and the shorter customer ID are easy to confuse. Our reference number vs customer ID guide shows exactly where each sits on the bill and when you need which.

Method 1: An Old Bill From Any Month

Look before you dial. People skip this and regret it.

The reference number is the same on every bill you have ever received, so one from four months ago does the job. Check the usual drawer, the file where the gas bill lives, and behind the meter box — tucking the last bill there is a near-universal habit.

Method 2: Bill Photos on Your Phone

This resolves it for more people than anything else in this guide, and costs you two minutes.

If you’ve ever photographed a bill to WhatsApp to a brother in Karachi, a shopkeeper who pays it, or anyone else, the image is still on your phone. Scroll your camera roll around the first two weeks of any month, when bills land and get photographed.

Then check WhatsApp media in the chat with whoever handles the payment. The reference is legible in most bill photos.

Method 3: Your Wallet or Bank App

Paid a PESCO bill online before? Then the number is already saved and no call is needed.

Open JazzCash, Easypaisa or your bank app and check:

Saved billers. Apps store the biller after your first payment — PESCO will be listed with the reference attached.

Transaction history. Any past electricity payment shows the reference number on its receipt.

Bank apps usually hold a year or more; wallets keep several months. Screenshot it and save it somewhere you’ll find it next time.

Our PESCO bill payment online guide covers each app in detail.

Method 4: Call 118 or 091-9212400

The official route.

Dial 118 from any network, or reach PESCO on 091-9212400. The general line 091-111-000-128 also gets you through. Have ready:

  1. Your CNIC number
  2. The full address as printed on the bill — house, street, mohalla, village or town, district
  3. The name on the connection if it’s not yours

The agent searches by address and reads the reference back. Repeat every digit before you hang up. Fourteen numbers over a weak line in Bannu or Dir is a genuine risk of getting one wrong.

If the connection sits in a name you can’t document a relationship with, expect to be sent to the subdivision office. That does work — see Method 6.

Method 5: The Meter Reader

Straightforward and free.

The reader who covers your street each month carries the account details for every meter on his route. Ask a neighbour or the shopkeeper at the corner which day he usually comes, and catch him then. Most read the number out without any hesitation.

Ask which subdivision you fall under while you have him. That detail speeds up every later phone call.

Method 6: Your PESCO Subdivision Office

The fallback that never fails, provided you bring documents.

Go to your area’s PESCO customer services centre or SDO office with:

  • Your original CNIC
  • Proof of address — tenancy agreement, purchase deed, or a gas or water bill for the same property
  • An authority letter if you’re acting for the registered owner

Ask the billing counter to trace the reference against the address. They can usually print a duplicate bill on the spot, which means you can go and pay it the same day rather than returning.

Practical note: in the outer districts, subdivision offices keep shorter effective counter hours than the Peshawar city offices. Go in the morning.

Method 7: The 10-Digit Customer ID

A shortcut plenty of people miss.

PESCO bills carry a 10-digit Customer ID in the same top-left block as the 14-digit reference. On the bill checker the two are generally interchangeable — either one returns the same bill.

So if the only thing you kept was a shorter number from an old note or a form, try it before assuming it’s useless. Ten digits isn’t a broken reference; it’s most likely the customer ID.

For a full breakdown of how the two identifiers differ, see reference number vs customer ID.

The 8334 SMS Service

PITC runs an SMS bill service across the government DISCOs, PESCO included:

PITC (space) 14-digit reference number → send to 8334

Amount and due date come back in seconds, with no data needed. That genuinely matters in the hill districts — Chitral, Dir, upper Swat — where mobile data is unreliable but SMS gets through.

But read the input. It requires the reference number. It cannot find a lost one. Keep it for afterwards.

You can also register your connection for automatic monthly bill alerts, so the amount reaches you by text without asking. Our guide to electricity bill SMS registration covers the setup.

Is the Meter Number Useful?

Not online. Quite useful in person.

The meter number is the serial stamped on the meter body — it identifies hardware, not a billing account. The public checker reads only the reference or customer ID, which is why a meter serial returns “record not found” and convinces people the site has broken.

At the counter it’s a different matter. PESCO staff can search internally by meter serial, and that’s valuable in villages where several houses share one address or plot description and an address search comes back ambiguous. Write it down before you go — it costs nothing and sometimes saves the whole trip.

Mistakes Worth Avoiding

Typing the meter serial into the bill checker. It returns nothing, every single time.

Losing a leading zero. Some references begin with 0. Save one in a spreadsheet and the zero disappears, leaving 13 digits that will never load. Count them.

Mixing up SNGPL and PESCO identifiers. Gas consumer numbers use a different format.

Paying a second time. If the payment doesn’t reflect immediately, wait 24 to 48 hours. Duplicates become advances and take weeks to unwind.

Entering your CNIC on a “PESCO bill check by CNIC” site. No such lookup exists, so that page is harvesting your data for something other than a bill.

FAQs

Can I check my PESCO bill using my CNIC or name?

Neither works on the official PESCO or PITC portal, both because of privacy and because the meter is frequently held in a landlord’s or a late relative’s name rather than yours. Your CNIC is still the document you’ll use to identify yourself when calling 091-9212400 to have the reference number traced by address.

How do I recover a lost PESCO reference number?

Check any old bill first, since the number never changes between months, then search your phone gallery and WhatsApp for a bill photo. If those come up empty, look in your wallet or bank app’s saved billers, and then call 118 or 091-9212400 with your CNIC and complete address.

Can I check a PESCO bill by meter number?

Not online — the bill checker reads only the 14-digit reference number or the 10-digit customer ID. Bring the meter serial to your subdivision office instead, where staff can search internal records with it, which helps in villages where several houses share an address.

What’s the difference between the PESCO reference number and customer ID?

The reference number runs to 14 digits and the customer ID to 10, and both are printed in the same top-left block of the bill. They point to the same account, so whichever one you still have will normally pull up your bill in the checker.

Does the 8334 SMS service find a lost reference number?

No. You send your 14-digit reference number to 8334 and it sends back your amount and due date, so it reports a bill rather than locating one. It is genuinely useful in Chitral, Dir and other areas where SMS works but mobile data doesn’t.

Why has my PESCO reference number stopped working?

Because it’s tied to the meter and billing account rather than to you, a meter replacement or a change of connection can produce a new number. Call 091-9212400 with your address and confirm the current reference before assuming the portal has a fault.

What happens after I recover the number?

Enter it in the bill checker to see your units, payable amount and due date, then download or print a duplicate copy if needed. The PESCO bill online check guide covers the process, and PESCO per unit price 2026 explains how the amount was worked out.
