SEPCO Bill Check Without Reference Number 2026: 7 Options

Updated: August 2026

The straight answer: SEPCO has no bill search by name, CNIC or meter number. The portal reads a 14-digit reference number, or a 10-digit customer ID, and refuses everything else. If a website is offering you a “SEPCO bill check by name” box, it isn’t connected to SEPCO’s actual billing data.

That said, getting the number back is rarely difficult. An old bill, a photo in your phone, or a call to 071-9310173 with your CNIC and address usually settles it the same day.

Seven methods below, ordered by how reliably they work. Already have your number? Go to SEPCO bill online check.

On a different distribution company? The same problem affects all of them. Our main guide on how to check an electricity bill without a reference number covers every DISCO plus K-Electric.

Why Name and CNIC Lookup Doesn’t Exist

Two things are going on. The first is privacy. The second, and the one that actually blocks most people, is that the meter is often not registered in your name at all — rented houses, inherited property, connections still in a previous owner’s or a late relative’s name. In each of those cases your CNIC has no link to the billing account, so even a CNIC search would find nothing for you.

The “check bill by CNIC” claim, and the sites that exploit it, are covered in full in our main guide to checking an electricity bill without a reference number. The short version: SEPCO indexes on the 14-digit reference number, so recovering that number is the job.

Where to Find the Reference Number

Top-left block of the bill, sitting under the consumer name and address, labelled REFERENCE NO. Fourteen digits, no spaces or dashes.

Something along the lines of 28131234567890.

The opening digits identify your circle and subdivision, which is why every bill on your street starts the same way. It’s a small thing, but quoting the prefix on the helpline narrows their search.

The number is attached to the meter, not to you. New house, new number. Replace a burnt-out meter and SEPCO may issue a fresh reference — which is what’s usually behind “my old number stopped working.”

Everything else printed on the page is explained in electricity bill terms explained.

The reference number and the shorter customer ID are easy to confuse. Our reference number vs customer ID guide shows exactly where each sits on the bill and when you need which.

Method 1: Any Bill From Any Month

Search the house before you pick up the phone.

The reference number is identical on every bill you have ever received, so one from five months ago is just as good. Look in the usual drawer, the file where the gas and water bills live, and behind the meter box — a widespread habit across upper Sindh.

Method 2: Photos on Your Phone

Two minutes, and it works more often than any other single method here.

If you’ve ever photographed a bill to send to a son working in Karachi or the Gulf, or to a shopkeeper who pays it on your behalf, that image is still on your phone. Scroll your camera roll around the first two weeks of any month, when bills arrive and get photographed.

Then check WhatsApp media in the chat with whoever normally deals with the bill. Most bill photos are sharp enough to read the reference straight off.

Method 3: Your Wallet or Bank App

If a SEPCO bill has ever been paid online from your phone, the number is already stored.

Open JazzCash, Easypaisa or your bank app and look at:

Saved billers. After the first payment the app keeps the biller — SEPCO will be listed with the reference attached.

Transaction history. Any past electricity payment shows the reference number on its receipt.

Bank apps generally keep a year or more of history, wallets a few months. Screenshot whatever you find.

Our SEPCO bill payment online guide covers each app if you want to save the biller properly afterwards.

Method 4: Call 118 or 071-9310173

The official route for a genuinely lost number.

Dial the universal 118, or SEPCO on 071-9310173. Have ready:

  1. Your CNIC number
  2. The full address as printed on the bill — house, street, mohalla, taluka, district
  3. The name on the connection if it isn’t yours

The agent searches by address and reads the reference back. Repeat every digit before hanging up. Mishearing one number out of fourteen over a rural line is easy and costs you the entire call.

If the connection is in a name you can’t document a relationship with, expect to be sent to the subdivision office instead.

Method 5: Ask the Meter Reader

Free, informal, and genuinely effective.

The reader who walks your street each month carries account details for every meter on his route. Ask a neighbour which day he usually comes and catch him then. Most will read the number out without any fuss.

Ask him which subdivision you fall under while you’re at it — that single detail makes every phone call afterwards faster.

Method 6: SEPCO Subdivision Office

The fallback that always works, provided you bring the paperwork.

Head to your area’s SEPCO customer services centre or SDO office with:

  • Your original CNIC
  • Proof of address — tenancy agreement, purchase deed, or a gas or water bill for the same property
  • An authority letter if you’re acting for the registered owner

Ask the billing counter to trace the reference by address. They can normally print a duplicate bill on the spot, so you can go and pay it that same day.

Take the meter serial with you (see below). In the smaller talukas an address alone frequently matches more than one connection, and the serial resolves it immediately.

Method 7: The 10-Digit Customer ID

A shortcut a lot of people don’t know about.

SEPCO bills print a 10-digit Customer ID in the same top-left block as the 14-digit reference. On the bill checker the two are normally interchangeable — enter either and the same bill loads.

So if the only number you managed to keep is 10 digits long, don’t throw it away as incomplete. It’s very likely the customer ID, and it works on its own.

For a full breakdown of how the two identifiers differ, see reference number vs customer ID.

The 8334 SMS Service

PITC runs an SMS bill service for SEPCO along with the other government DISCOs:

PITC (space) 14-digit reference number → send to 8334

Your amount and due date come back within seconds and no data connection is needed. That matters across Kashmore, Ghotki and the rural parts of Larkana division, where SMS is dependable and mobile data often isn’t.

But note the input requirement — it needs the reference number and cannot find a lost one. Save this for once you’ve recovered the number.

You can also register your connection for automatic monthly bill alerts, so the amount reaches you by text without asking. Our guide to electricity bill SMS registration covers the setup.

Where the Meter Number Helps

Online, nowhere. At the counter, considerably.

The meter number is the serial stamped on the meter body. It identifies a piece of hardware, while the reference number identifies a billing account. The public checker only reads the second, which is why entering a meter serial returns “record not found” and persuades people the website has crashed.

In person it earns its keep. SEPCO staff can search internally by meter serial, and that’s genuinely important in villages where several houses share a single address or plot description. Note it down before you set off — it’s free and it sometimes saves you a repeat trip.

Complaint numbers for every distribution company are collected in our electricity complaint helpline numbers guide.

Mistakes That Cost You a Day

Entering the meter serial in the bill checker. Never works. Not a fault in the portal.

Losing a leading zero. Some references start with 0. Save one in a spreadsheet and the zero disappears, leaving 13 digits that load nothing. Count them.

Confusing SSGC gas numbers with SEPCO ones. Different format entirely.

Paying twice. If the payment doesn’t appear straight away, wait 24 to 48 hours. Duplicates become advances and take weeks to sort out.

Typing your CNIC into a “check by CNIC” website. SEPCO offers no such lookup, so that page is collecting your details for a purpose other than showing you a bill.

FAQs

Can I check my SEPCO bill by name or CNIC?

Neither exists on SEPCO’s official portal, both for privacy reasons and because so many connections in upper Sindh are still registered in a father’s or grandfather’s name rather than the current occupant’s. Your CNIC remains the document you’ll use to identify yourself when calling 071-9310173 to have the reference number traced by address.

How do I recover a lost SEPCO reference number?

Start with any older bill, since the number is identical every month, then search your phone gallery and WhatsApp for a bill photo. If those fail, check your wallet or bank app’s saved billers, then call 118 or 071-9310173 with your CNIC and full address.

Is SEPCO bill check by meter number possible?

Not through the online checker, which accepts only the 14-digit reference number or the 10-digit customer ID. Bring the meter serial to your subdivision office instead, where staff can search their internal records with it — especially useful in talukas where one address matches several connections.

Can I use the SEPCO customer ID instead?

Yes, in most cases. The 10-digit customer ID is printed in the same top-left block as the reference number and points to the same account, so entering it into the bill checker normally returns the same bill.

Does the 8334 SMS service find a lost reference number?

No. You send your 14-digit reference number to 8334 and it replies with your amount and due date, so it reports on a bill rather than locating one. It’s still very useful across Kashmore and Ghotki where SMS works reliably but mobile data doesn’t.

Why has my SEPCO reference number stopped working?

The number belongs to the meter and the billing account rather than to you, so a meter replacement or a change of connection can produce a new one. Ring 071-9310173 with your address and confirm the current reference before assuming there’s a problem with the site.

What do I do once I’ve got the number?

Enter it into the bill checker to see your units, amount payable and due date, then download or print a duplicate if you need one. The SEPCO bill online check guide walks through it, and SEPCO per unit price 2026 explains how the total was calculated.
