GEPCO Bill Check Without Reference Number 2026: What Works

Updated: August 2026

Here’s the honest position: GEPCO has no bill search by name, CNIC or meter number. The portal takes a 14-digit reference number or a 10-digit customer ID, full stop. Anything advertising a “GEPCO bill check by name” tool is not connected to real GEPCO data.

But losing the bill isn’t the disaster it feels like. The reference number is recoverable in minutes — usually from an old bill, a photo on your phone, or one call to 055-9200851 with your CNIC and address. This guide covers each route, and what to do when the easy ones fail.

Got the number already? Go straight to checking your GEPCO bill online.

On a different distribution company? The same problem affects all of them. Our main guide on how to check an electricity bill without a reference number covers every DISCO plus K-Electric.

Quick Reference: What Each Identifier Does

Customer ID10Yes, in most cases
Meter serial numberVariesNo — office use only
CNIC13No — helpline identification only
Consumer nameNo

The pattern across every GEPCO district is the same, whether you’re in Gujranwala city or a village outside Hafizabad.

Why Name and CNIC Lookup Doesn’t Exist

Two things are going on. The first is privacy. The second, and the one that actually blocks most people, is that the meter is often not registered in your name at all — rented houses, inherited property, connections still in a previous owner’s or a late relative’s name. In each of those cases your CNIC has no link to the billing account, so even a CNIC search would find nothing for you.

The “check bill by CNIC” claim, and the sites that exploit it, are covered in full in our main guide to checking an electricity bill without a reference number. The short version: GEPCO indexes on the 14-digit reference number, so recovering that number is the job.

Spotting the Reference Number on Your Bill

Top-left block, directly under the consumer name and address. Fourteen digits in slightly larger print, labelled REFERENCE NO.

Something like 26141234567890.

The leading digits encode your circle and subdivision, which is why bills across your street all begin with the same few numbers. Small thing, but useful — a neighbour’s bill confirms your prefix, and mentioning it on the helpline narrows the search.

Worth remembering: the reference is tied to the meter, not to you. New house, new number. Replaced meter, possibly a new number too. That’s usually why a number that worked last year suddenly returns nothing.

Every other line on the page is unpacked in electricity bill terms explained.

The reference number and the shorter customer ID are easy to confuse. Our reference number vs customer ID guide shows exactly where each sits on the bill and when you need which.

Method 1: Find Any Previous Bill

Do this before anything else, even if you’re certain there’s nothing.

The reference number never changes between months. A bill from February works exactly as well as this month’s. Check:

  • Wherever bills normally pile up
  • The file with your gas and water bills
  • Behind or under the meter box — a very common habit across the GEPCO region

This solves it for more people than any other method here, and it takes ninety seconds.

If you’ve ever photographed a bill to WhatsApp to a relative, a shopkeeper, or whoever usually pays it, that photo is still sitting on your phone. Scroll your camera roll around the first two weeks of any month — that’s when bills arrive and get photographed.

Then search WhatsApp media in the chat with whoever handles the bill. The reference number is legible in most bill photos.

Method 3: Saved Billers in JazzCash, Easypaisa or Your Bank

If you’ve ever paid a GEPCO bill online, the number is already stored somewhere in your phone.

Open the app and look in:

Saved billers or beneficiaries. Once you pay a biller, the app keeps it. GEPCO will be listed with the reference number visible.

Transaction history. Open any old electricity payment — the receipt shows the reference number, amount and date.

Wallets hold a few months of history, bank apps typically a year or more. Screenshot whatever you find.

Our GEPCO bill payment online guide covers setting the biller up properly so this doesn’t recur.

Method 4: Ring 118 or 055-9200851

The official recovery route.

Dial the universal 118, or call GEPCO on 055-9200851. Keep ready:

  1. Your CNIC number
  2. The complete address as printed on the bill — house, street, mohalla, town
  3. The name on the connection if it isn’t yours

The agent searches by address and reads the reference back. Repeat it digit by digit before you hang up — mishearing one number out of fourteen is easy and costs you the whole exercise.

If the account is in a name you can’t document a link to, expect to be pointed at the subdivision office instead.

Method 5: Catch the Meter Reader

Simple and free.

The reader covering your street carries account details for every meter on his route. Ask a neighbour which day he usually comes and catch him. Most will read the number out on request without any fuss.

Ask him which subdivision you fall under while you’re there. That single detail speeds up every phone call afterwards.

Method 6: The GEPCO Subdivision Office

The fallback that always works if you bring the right documents.

Visit your area’s GEPCO customer services centre or SDO office with:

  • Your original CNIC
  • Proof of address — tenancy agreement, purchase deed, or a gas or water bill for the same property
  • An authority letter if you’re acting for the registered owner

Ask the billing counter to trace the reference by address. They can usually print a duplicate bill on the spot, so you leave able to pay immediately rather than making a second trip.

Morning is better. Billing counters across Gujranwala and Sialkot get busy by midday, and considerably worse in the final week before due dates.

Method 7: Use the Customer ID Instead

An easy win that gets overlooked.

GEPCO bills print a 10-digit Customer ID in the same top-left block as the reference number. On the bill checker the two are normally interchangeable — feed in either and you get the same bill.

So if the only thing you kept is a shorter number from an old note or a form, try it. Ten digits isn’t a broken reference number, it’s probably the customer ID doing its job.

The SMS Service and Its Limitation

PITC runs an SMS bill service for GEPCO alongside the other government DISCOs:

PITC (space) 14-digit reference number → send to 8334

Amount and due date come back in seconds, with no data connection needed — useful in parts of Mandi Bahauddin and Narowal where coverage thins out.

Read the input requirement again though. It needs the reference number. It cannot find a lost one. Bookmark it for after you’ve recovered the number.

You can also register your connection for automatic monthly bill alerts, so the amount reaches you by text without asking. Our guide to electricity bill SMS registration covers the setup.

Does the Meter Number Help?

Not online. Very much so in person.

The meter number is the serial stamped on the meter body — it identifies hardware, not a billing account. The public checker reads only the reference or customer ID, which is why typing a meter serial returns nothing and leaves people convinced the portal has crashed.

At the counter it’s genuinely useful. GEPCO staff can search internally by meter serial, and that matters in colonies where several houses share a plot number and address search comes back ambiguous. Note it down before you go. Costs nothing, occasionally saves the trip.

GEPCO supplies Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad. Format and recovery methods are identical across all six districts.

Complaint numbers for every distribution company are collected in our electricity complaint helpline numbers guide.

Where People Go Wrong

Entering the meter serial in the bill checker. Returns nothing every time. Not a fault.

Losing a leading zero. Some references start with 0. Save it in a spreadsheet and the zero disappears, leaving 13 digits that load nothing. Count them.

Mixing up gas and electricity identifiers. SNGPL consumer numbers use a different format and won’t work here.

Paying twice. If the payment doesn’t show immediately, wait 24 to 48 hours. A double payment becomes an advance and takes weeks to sort out.

Giving your CNIC to a “check by CNIC” website. GEPCO has no such lookup. Whatever that page is collecting, it isn’t bill data.

FAQs

Can I check my GEPCO bill by name or CNIC?

Neither works on any official GEPCO or PITC portal, both for privacy reasons and because the meter is frequently registered to a landlord or a previous owner rather than to you. Your CNIC is still what identifies you when you call 118 or 055-9200851 to have the reference number traced by address.

How do I find my GEPCO reference number without a bill?

Check any older bill first, since the number is the same on all of them, then search your phone gallery and WhatsApp for a bill photo. If that draws a blank, look in your wallet or bank app’s saved billers, and only then call 055-9200851 with your CNIC and full address.

Is GEPCO bill check by meter number possible?

Not through the online checker, which accepts only the 14-digit reference number or the 10-digit customer ID. The meter serial is worth writing down for a subdivision office visit, where staff can search their internal records with it.

Can I use the GEPCO customer ID instead of the reference number?

Yes, in most cases. The 10-digit customer ID sits in the same top-left block of the bill and points to the same account, so entering it into the bill checker normally returns the same result as the 14-digit reference.

Why has my GEPCO reference number stopped working?

The number belongs to the meter and the billing account rather than to you, so a meter replacement or a change of connection can generate a new one. Call 055-9200851 with your address to confirm the current reference before assuming the site is broken.

Does the 8334 SMS service find a lost reference number?

No. You have to send the 14-digit reference number to 8334 to get your amount and due date back, so it reports on a bill rather than locating one. It’s a useful shortcut once you’ve recovered the number, particularly where mobile data is weak.

What’s the next step after recovering the number?

Enter it into the bill checker to see your units, amount payable and due date, then download or print a duplicate copy if you need it. The GEPCO bill online check guide covers the process, and GEPCO per unit price 2026 explains how the total was calculated.
