Updated: August 2026
K-Electric works differently from every other utility in this country, and that trips people up. KE doesn’t use a 14-digit reference number at all — it uses a 13-digit Account Number and an 8-digit Consumer Number. You need one of those to pull up a bill. Name search and CNIC search don’t exist, and KE has said as much: consumer-name lookup is restricted deliberately to prevent identity theft.
So if you’ve lost the bill, the job is recovering the account number. In Karachi that’s usually easier than elsewhere — the KE Live app, a dense network of customer care centres, and the 118 helpline all work, and most people are sorted the same day.

On a different distribution company? The same problem affects all of them. Our main guide on how to check an electricity bill without a reference number covers every DISCO plus K-Electric.

KE’s Numbers Are Not Like the Other DISCOs
This is the single biggest source of confusion, so it’s worth pinning down before anything else.
Every government DISCO — LESCO, MEPCO, PESCO and the rest — runs on the PITC billing system and issues a 14-digit reference number. K-Electric is a private utility with its own billing infrastructure. It doesn’t use PITC, and it doesn’t issue reference numbers in that format.
Instead KE gives you:
| Identifier | Length | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Account Number | 13 digits | The primary key for bill lookup and payment |
| Consumer Number | 8 digits | Alternate identifier, printed on the bill header |
If you’ve been typing a 14-digit number into KE’s portal and getting nothing, that’s why. And the PITC SMS service on 8334 does not work for K-Electric — that’s a government DISCO service only. Plenty of guides get this wrong.
What Works and What Doesn’t
| What you have | Bill check possible? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 13-digit account number | Yes | Enter it and you’re done |
| 8-digit consumer number | Yes | Alternate lookup field |
| Any old KE bill | Yes | Numbers don’t change month to month |
| CNIC only | No | Call 118 or visit an IBC |
| Name only | No | Restricted by KE policy |
| Meter serial only | No | Useful at the customer care centre |
Why KE Blocks Name and CNIC Search
Two things are going on. The first is privacy. The second, and the one that actually blocks most people, is that the meter is often not registered in your name at all — rented houses, inherited property, connections still in a previous owner’s or a late relative’s name. In each of those cases your CNIC has no link to the billing account, so even a CNIC search would find nothing for you.
The “check bill by CNIC” claim, and the sites that exploit it, are covered in full in our main guide to checking an electricity bill without a reference number. The short version: K-Electric indexes on the 13-digit account number, so recovering that number is the job.
Where the Numbers Are Printed
Look at the top section of the bill header. KE prints both identifiers there:
- Account Number — 13 digits, usually the most prominent
- Consumer Number — 8 digits, printed alongside it
Neither changes month to month. A bill from January carries exactly the same numbers as August’s.
Like every utility, the account is tied to the connection, not to you personally. Move flat and you get a new account number. A meter replacement can also trigger a change, which is the usual explanation when a saved number suddenly stops working.
Everything else on the page is decoded in electricity bill terms explained.
If you also deal with a WAPDA DISCO connection elsewhere, note that those use a 14-digit reference number and a 10-digit customer ID instead. Our reference number vs customer ID guide explains both systems and covers the K-Electric exception.
Method 1: Any Old KE Bill
Search the flat before doing anything else.
The account number is identical on every bill you’ve ever received. Check wherever bills accumulate, the file with your gas and water papers, and — in apartments especially — ask whether the building office keeps copies. Many Karachi buildings do.
Method 2: Bill Photos on Your Phone
Two minutes, and it resolves this more often than anything else in this guide.
If you’ve ever photographed a bill to WhatsApp to a landlord, a family member, or whoever pays it, that image is still on your phone. Scroll your camera roll around the first two weeks of any month, when bills land and get photographed.
Then search WhatsApp media in the chat with your landlord or building manager. In rented Karachi flats, that conversation is where the bill photo almost always ends up.
Method 3: The KE Live App
This is KE’s own app, and it’s the closest thing to a self-service recovery tool any Pakistani utility offers.
If you have ever registered your connection in KE Live, the account is saved in your profile — open the app and it’s there, no lookup needed. That’s the fastest possible route.
If you haven’t registered before, you’ll still need the account number to add the connection in the first place, so the app won’t rescue you from a cold start. But it’s worth opening to check, because people forget they registered.
Once you’re in, KE Live handles duplicate bill downloads, payment, outage reporting and complaints in one place. Register the connection the moment you recover the number so this never happens twice.
Method 4: Your Wallet or Bank App
If a KE bill has ever been paid online from your phone, the number is already stored.
Open JazzCash, Easypaisa or your bank app and check:
Saved billers. After the first payment the app remembers the biller — K-Electric will be listed with the account number attached.
Transaction history. Any past electricity payment shows the account number on its receipt.
Bank apps typically hold a year or more of history; wallets keep several months. Screenshot it this time.
Our K-Electric bill payment online guide covers each option.
Method 5: Call 118
The universal helpline works for K-Electric too, and it’s the official route for a lost account number.
Dial 118. Have ready:
- Your CNIC number
- The full address as printed on the bill — flat and building number, block, sector, area
- The name on the connection if it isn’t yours
- The meter serial number if you can read it off the meter
Karachi addresses are relatively precise — a block and building number narrows things down fast — so these lookups tend to go quicker than in rural DISCO regions.
If the connection is in a landlord’s name and you can’t document the relationship, expect to be pointed toward a customer care centre.
Method 6: A KE Customer Care Centre (IBC)
K-Electric runs Integrated Business Centres across Karachi, and unlike some DISCO offices they’re set up for walk-in consumer service.
Bring:
- Your original CNIC
- Proof of address — tenancy agreement, allotment letter, purchase deed, or a gas or water bill for the same flat
- The meter serial number, noted down beforehand
- An authority letter if you’re acting for the registered owner
Ask them to trace the account number against the address. They can print a duplicate bill on the spot, so you can pay it the same day.
Take the meter serial seriously here. In apartment buildings where a dozen meters sit on one board under a single street address, the serial is frequently the only thing that distinguishes your connection from your neighbour’s.
Method 7: Ask the Building Manager or Landlord
In Karachi this is often the single fastest call to make, and people leave it until last.
If you rent, the landlord almost certainly has the account number saved — the connection is in their name and they’ve dealt with it for years.
If you’re in an apartment building, the building manager or society office usually keeps a register of every flat’s meter and account details. That register exists precisely because meters sit on a shared board and someone has to keep track.
One phone call. Try it before you queue anywhere.
What About the Meter Number?
Not usable in the online bill checker. Very useful in person.
The meter number is the serial stamped on the meter casing. It identifies hardware; the account number identifies a billing account. KE’s portal reads the account or consumer number only, so a meter serial returns nothing.
At an IBC counter it’s a different story, and in Karachi it matters more than almost anywhere. Apartment blocks routinely have ten or twenty meters mounted on one board sharing a single building address — an address search alone can’t tell KE staff which one is yours. The serial can. Photograph the meter plate before you go.

K-Electric is the sole supplier for Karachi and adjoining areas, including parts of Dhabeji and Gharo in Thatta district and Uthal in Balochistan. It is the only privately owned vertically integrated utility in Pakistan, which is why its billing identifiers, tariff structure and customer systems all differ from the government DISCOs.
Complaint numbers for every distribution company are collected in our electricity complaint helpline numbers guide.
Mistakes People Make
Typing a 14-digit number into KE’s portal. KE uses 13 digits. If your number is 14 long, it isn’t a K-Electric account number.
Texting 8334 for a KE bill. That’s the PITC service for government DISCOs. It does nothing for K-Electric.
Entering the meter serial in the bill checker. Won’t work. Bring it to an IBC instead.
Not asking the landlord first. In rented Karachi flats this solves it more often than any official channel.
Paying twice. If a payment doesn’t reflect immediately, wait 24 to 48 hours. Duplicates become advances and take weeks to reclaim.
Entering your CNIC on a “KE bill check by CNIC” site. KE restricts this deliberately, so no third party has legitimate access to it either.
FAQs
Can I check my K-Electric bill by name or CNIC?
No. K-Electric restricts consumer-name and CNIC lookup deliberately, to protect privacy and prevent identity theft, so no official portal offers it. Your CNIC is still what identifies you when you call 118 or visit a customer care centre to have the account number traced against your address.
What number do I need to check a K-Electric bill?
Either the 13-digit Account Number or the 8-digit Consumer Number, both printed in the header of every KE bill. K-Electric does not use the 14-digit reference number format that LESCO, MEPCO and the other government DISCOs issue.
Does the PITC 8334 SMS service work for K-Electric?
No. The 8334 shortcode is a PITC service covering the government distribution companies only, and K-Electric runs its own separate billing system. Use the KE Live app or ke.com.pk instead.
How do I recover a lost K-Electric account number?
If you rent, call your landlord or building manager first — they almost always have it. Otherwise check any old bill, your phone gallery, and your wallet or bank app’s saved billers, then call 118 with your CNIC, full address and the meter serial number.
Can I check my KE bill using the meter number?
Not through the online bill checker, which reads only the account or consumer number. The meter serial is genuinely important at a customer care centre, though, because Karachi apartment buildings often have many meters on one board under a single address and the serial is what distinguishes yours.
Will the KE Live app find my account number for me?
Only if you registered the connection previously, in which case it’s already saved in your profile. Adding a new connection to the app still requires the account number, so it won’t help from a cold start — but it’s worth checking, since people forget they signed up.
What do I do once I have the number?
Enter it to view your units, payable amount and due date, and download a duplicate copy if you need one printed. The K-Electric duplicate bill guide covers the process, and K-Electric per unit price 2026 explains the slab rates and fixed charges behind the total.
