You can’t. Not directly, anyway — and it’s better to hear that upfront than after twenty minutes on a site pretending otherwise. MEPCO’s billing portal accepts a 14-digit reference number or a 10-digit customer ID, and nothing else. No name field, no CNIC field, no meter number search.
The good news is that recovering a lost reference number is genuinely easy. MEPCO runs a toll-free line on 0800-63726 that’s answered around the clock, and with your CNIC and address the agent reads the number straight back to you. Most people are done in one call.
Below are seven methods, ordered by how quickly they tend to work. If you’ve already got your number, head to MEPCO bill online check instead.
On a different distribution company? The same problem affects all of them. Our main guide on how to check an electricity bill without a reference number covers every DISCO plus K-Electric.

What Works and What Doesn’t
| You have | Online check possible? | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| 14-digit reference number | Yes | Enter it and you’re done |
| 10-digit customer ID | Yes, in most cases | Try the same input field |
| Old bill (any month) | Yes | Number never changes |
| CNIC only | No | Call 0800-63726 or 118 |
| Consumer name only | No | Call the helpline with address |
| Meter serial only | No | Take it to the SDO office |
MEPCO is the largest DISCO in Pakistan by consumer count, which is exactly why the lost-reference-number problem comes up so often across Multan, Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan.
Why There’s No Name or CNIC Search
Two things are going on. The first is privacy. The second, and the one that actually blocks most people, is that the meter is often not registered in your name at all — rented houses, inherited property, connections still in a previous owner’s or a late relative’s name. In each of those cases your CNIC has no link to the billing account, so even a CNIC search would find nothing for you.
The “check bill by CNIC” claim, and the sites that exploit it, are covered in full in our main guide to checking an electricity bill without a reference number. The short version: MEPCO indexes on the 14-digit reference number, so recovering that number is the job.
Finding the Number on a Bill
Look at the top-left corner, just under the consumer name and address. Fourteen digits, printed slightly larger, labelled REFERENCE NO.
Something in the shape of 37201234567890.
The opening digits encode your circle and subdivision. That’s why every bill in your street shares the same prefix — a small detail, but useful when you’re on the phone to the helpline and want to narrow the search down.
Remember that the reference belongs to the meter, not to you. Move to a new house, new number. Get a burnt meter replaced, and MEPCO may issue a fresh reference — which explains most cases of “my saved number stopped working.”
Every other line on the page is decoded in our guide to electricity bill terms explained.
The reference number and the shorter customer ID are easy to confuse. Our reference number vs customer ID guide shows exactly where each sits on the bill and when you need which.
Method 1: Call 0800-63726 (Fastest)
MEPCO’s toll-free helpline is the single most reliable route, and it’s free from any network.
Call 0800-63726, or use 0800-00-118, or dial the universal 118. Then:
- Say you’ve lost your bill and need the reference number.
- Give your CNIC number.
- Read out the full address exactly as it appears on the bill — house number, street, mohalla, town, district.
- Have the name on the connection ready if it isn’t yours.
The agent searches by address, confirms a detail or two, and reads the number out. Repeat it back digit by digit. Fourteen numbers over a rural line is a genuine risk of mishearing one.
If the connection is registered to someone you can’t document a relationship with, expect to be sent to the subdivision office. That’s Method 6, and it does work.
Method 2: Any Old MEPCO Bill
Before you call anyone, spend two minutes looking.
The reference number is identical on every bill you’ve ever received, so a bill from January is as good as August’s. Check the drawer, the file where the gas bill lives, and — this one catches people out — behind the meter box. Tucking the last bill there is a widespread habit across the MEPCO region.
Method 3: Your Phone Gallery and WhatsApp
This deserves its own section because it solves the problem more often than any other trick here.
If you’ve ever photographed a bill to send to a family member, a shopkeeper, or someone paying on your behalf, that image is still on your phone. Search your camera roll around the 1st to 15th of any month, which is when bills land and get photographed.
Then check WhatsApp media in your chats with whoever usually handles the bill. Roman Urdu searches like “bill” in chat search often surface it directly.
Method 4: JazzCash, Easypaisa or Bank App
Paid online at any point in the past? Then the number is already saved and you don’t need to phone anybody.
Open the app and check two places:
Saved billers. Apps store a biller once you’ve used it. MEPCO will be sitting there with your reference number attached.
Transaction history. Open any past electricity payment — the receipt carries the reference number, the amount and the date.
Wallets keep a few months of history; bank apps usually keep a year or more. Screenshot it this time.
If you want to set up the biller properly so this never happens again, our MEPCO bill payment online guide walks through each app.
Method 5: The Meter Reader on Your Street
Old-fashioned and completely free.
The reader who covers your street each month carries the account details for every meter on his route, either in a register or on a handheld device. Ask a neighbour which day he usually comes past and catch him then. Most will read the number out without a second thought.
While you’re talking, ask which subdivision you fall under. Knowing that makes every phone call afterwards faster.
Method 6: MEPCO Subdivision Office
The fallback that always works, provided you turn up with the right paperwork.
Go to your area’s MEPCO customer services centre or SDO office and bring:
- Your original CNIC, not just a photocopy
- Proof of address — tenancy agreement, purchase deed, or a gas or water bill for the same property
- An authority letter if the connection is in someone else’s name and you’re acting for them
Ask the billing counter to trace the reference number by address. They’ll normally print a duplicate bill for you there and then, so you can go and pay it without a second trip.
Go in the morning. MEPCO subdivision billing counters across Multan and Bahawalpur get heavy by midday, and worse in the last week before the due date.
Method 7: Fall Back on the Customer ID
An easy win a lot of people don’t know about.
MEPCO bills print a 10-digit Customer ID alongside the 14-digit reference number, in the same top-left block. On the bill checker they’re generally interchangeable — either one pulls up the same bill.
So if the only thing you salvaged is a shorter number from an old note, a form, or an SMS, try it before writing it off. Ten digits isn’t a broken reference number; it’s probably the customer ID.
For a full breakdown of how the two identifiers differ, see reference number vs customer ID.
The PITC SMS Service (8334)
Worth knowing about, but be clear on what it does.
PITC runs an SMS bill service for MEPCO and the other government DISCOs:
PITC (space) your 14-digit reference number → send to 8334
You get the billed amount and due date back within seconds, with no data connection required. That’s genuinely useful in parts of D.G. Khan, Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh where mobile data can be unreliable.
But look at the input again — it needs the reference number. It cannot find a lost one for you. Save it for after you’ve recovered the number, not as a way to recover it.
You can also register your connection for automatic monthly bill alerts, so the amount reaches you by text without asking. Our guide to electricity bill SMS registration covers the setup.
Is the Meter Number Any Use?
Online, no. In person, yes — and it’s worth carrying.
The meter number is the serial stamped on the meter casing. It identifies hardware. The reference number identifies a billing account. The public checker reads only the second, which is why entering a meter serial returns “record not found” and convinces people the site is down.
At the subdivision counter it’s a different story. MEPCO staff can search internally by meter serial, and that matters in areas where several houses share a plot number and an address search comes back ambiguous. Write it down before you go — it’s a free backup that occasionally saves the entire trip.

Avoid These Mistakes
Feeding the meter serial into the bill checker. It will never work. The portal isn’t broken.
Losing a leading zero. Some references start with 0. Save one in a spreadsheet or a notes app that strips it and you’re left with 13 digits that load nothing. Count them.
Confusing SNGPL numbers with MEPCO ones. Gas consumer numbers use a different format entirely.
Paying twice. If your payment doesn’t reflect straight away, wait 24 to 48 hours. A double payment becomes an advance that takes weeks to unwind.
Handing your CNIC to a “MEPCO bill check by CNIC” site. MEPCO offers no such lookup, so whatever that page is collecting, it isn’t your bill.
FAQs
Can I check my MEPCO bill by name or CNIC?
Neither option exists on MEPCO’s official portal, partly for privacy and partly because the meter is often registered to a landlord or previous owner rather than to you. Your CNIC is still what you’ll use to identify yourself when you call 0800-63726 and ask the agent to trace the reference number by address.
How do I recover a lost MEPCO reference number?
The quickest route is MEPCO’s toll-free line on 0800-63726, where an agent looks the number up against your CNIC and full address. Before calling, though, check any old bill, your phone gallery and your wallet app’s saved billers — one of those solves it for most people without a call at all.
Is MEPCO bill check by meter number possible?
Not online, because the bill checker only reads the 14-digit reference number or the 10-digit customer ID. The meter serial is still worth noting down for a visit to the subdivision office, where staff can search their internal system with it.
What is the MEPCO customer ID and can I use it instead?
It’s a 10-digit identifier printed in the same top-left block as the reference number, pointing to the same account. In most cases you can enter it into the bill checker in place of the 14-digit number and get the same result.
Does the MEPCO SMS service work without a reference number?
No — the 8334 service requires you to send your 14-digit reference number, so it reports a bill rather than finding one. It’s a fast way to check your amount once you have the number, especially where mobile data is weak.
Why does my old MEPCO reference number no longer work?
A meter replacement or a change to your connection can trigger a new reference, since the number is tied to the meter and account rather than to you personally. Call 0800-63726 with your address and confirm the current number.
What should I do after I get my reference number?
Enter it into the bill checker to see your units, payable amount and due date, then download or print a duplicate copy if you need one. Our MEPCO bill online check guide covers the steps, and MEPCO per unit price 2026 explains how the amount was worked out.
